A traditional stay in historic Narai-juku 奈良井宿
Narai-juku sits at the foot of Torii Pass 鳥居峠 on the old Nakasendō, the mountain road that once carried travellers between Edo 江戸 and Kyoto 京都. In its day it was known as Sengen-machi 千軒町 — the town of a thousand houses — for the unbroken kilometre of wooden façades that still stands.
A Traditional Stay in Historic Narai-juku
Samurai Hotel Narai-so is a traditional Japanese inn near the entrance to Torii Pass in Narai-juku, one of Japan's best-preserved post towns. Surrounded by historic streets, mountains, and rich cultural heritage, it offers a peaceful, authentic stay in the heart of the Kiso Valley.
Comfortable Japanese-Style Accommodation
Guest rooms include traditional tatami rooms as well as renovated twin and family rooms. The simple, warm interiors let guests experience the atmosphere of a Japanese inn while enjoying a comfortable, relaxing stay.
Private Shared Bathrooms and a Shower Room
Guest rooms don't have private bathrooms. Two shared private bathrooms, each with a bathtub and shower, can be reserved at check-in. A separate shared shower room, with generous headroom, lets guests up to 2 metres tall shower comfortably standing. Shared private toilets are in the accommodation building.
A Spacious 100-Tatami Dojo
One of the inn's most distinctive features is its large traditional dojo. Guests can take part in an Iaido samurai sword experience, wear traditional hakama, learn basic sword movements, and discover the spirit and etiquette of the samurai.
Japanese Cultural Experiences
Cultural programs for staying guests include Iaido, a matcha tea experience, kimono dressing, lacquerware workshops, and traditional Oroku comb-making — a deeper connection to the history, craftsmanship, and traditions of the Kiso region.

Twin Traditional Japanese-Style Rooms
Tatami flooring, futon bedding, and simple, warm interiors — a peaceful place to experience a Japanese inn. Selected rooms look out over the mountains, calm through every season.
Twin Bed Rooms
Renovated rooms furnished with two comfortable Western-style beds, for couples, friends, or anyone who prefers a bed to a futon. Selected rooms overlook the mountains as well.
Triple and Family Rooms
Spacious rooms for families and small groups, with a combination of beds and traditional futon bedding depending on the room.

We offer free on-site parking for our guests. No reservation is required, and you are welcome to use the parking space upon arrival.

Samurai Hotel Narai-so offers two convenient luggage delivery options, allowing you to enjoy your journey without carrying heavy suitcases or backpacks.
1. Nationwide Luggage Delivery – Next-Day or Later Delivery. We can arrange luggage forwarding through Yamato Transport (TA-Q-BIN) from Samurai Hotel Narai-so to hotels, airports, and other destinations throughout Japan. This service is for luggage arriving the following day or later — same-day delivery is not available with this service.
Shipping fees are based on the size of your luggage and the destination; delivery times vary depending on the destination, weather, and transportation conditions, and some destinations, including airports and remote areas, may require additional delivery time. Our staff can assist you with completing the shipping form and confirming the final shipping fee and estimated delivery date.

For guests traveling along the Kiso Valley and Nakasendo Trail, same-day luggage delivery is available through NLTS (Nakasendo Luggage Transfer Service). Your luggage can be collected from Samurai Hotel Narai-so in Narai and delivered to your next accommodation along the Nakasendo area on the same day, allowing you to enjoy walking the trail without carrying heavy bags.
Service areas include destinations such as Kiso-Fukushima, Tsumago, Magome, Nakatsugawa, and other locations along the Nakasendo route. Breakfast and Dinner
In principle, a Japanese-style breakfast is included in all of our accommodation plans. Regarding restaurants in the evening, there are only two to three restaurants in Narai that may be open at night. However, their closing days are irregular, and we cannot guarantee that they will be open on the day of your stay. For this reason, we recommend having dinner at our hotel. We offer the following dinner variations:

A meat dish such as karaage (Japanese fried chicken), tonkatsu (breaded cutlet), or katsu curry (Japanese curry with breaded cutlet), served with an appetizer. Menu items may vary depending on the day.

Complimentary pick-up from Narai Station
You are welcome to leave your luggage at Narai Station — we will be happy to pick it up and bring it to Samurai Hotel Narai-so, so you can enjoy your walk comfortably and hands-free. We can also arrange transportation for guests traveling together with their luggage.
The luggage storage fee at the station is ¥700 per item, paid directly to Narai Station. Once you let us know your train's arrival time at Narai Station, we will come to collect your luggage at no additional charge. Please note that we may not be able to arrange this service unless it is requested at least 24 hours in advance.
Note: pick-up is arranged based on which direction you are arriving from.
- ① From the Shiojiri direction: if you are continuing by train to Yabuhara for the Torii Pass walk, we can pick up your luggage on the platform at Narai Station. This is a free service.

Shogun's Matcha — Tea Ceremony Experience
During the Edo period, the Ochatsubo Procession carried precious tea for the Tokugawa shogun from Uji to Edo. The procession traveled along the Nakasendo and passed through Narai-juku, an important post town on the route.
Experience this history through an authentic Japanese tea ceremony. Grind matcha on a traditional stone mill and prepare it yourself, in the style once presented to the shogun, while learning the history, etiquette, and meaning behind each step.

Access
Getting to Narai-juku 奈良井宿
Narai Station sits on the JR Chūō Line, about 30 minutes from Matsumoto 松本 and roughly 3 hours from Tokyo 東京 via Shiojiri 塩尻. From Nagoya 名古屋, it's about 2 hours via Kiso-Fukushima 木曽福島. From the station, the inn is about a 15–20 minute walk through the old town, or we can arrange pick-up.
By train
From JR Chūō Line Shiojiri Station, pass through Narai-juku and walk about 20 minutes.
By bus
Take the bus from Shinjuku Bus Terminal to Narai-juku. After crossing Narai Ohashi Bridge, walk about 20 minutes.
By car
From the Tokyo area, take the Nagano Expressway from Okaya JCT to Shiojiri, then Route 19 toward Nagoya. Turn right at the Narai intersection.
From the Nagoya area, take the Chūō Expressway to Ina, then Route 361 toward Kiso and Route 19 toward Matsumoto. Turn left at the Narai intersection.
At the railroad crossing, let them know you're staying at Narai-so to enter. At the dead end, turn left and follow the Narai-so sign downward.
